Who we are

Schefferville Mines Inc. (SMI) is an iron ore development and exploration company with projects situated within the Québec portion of the prolific Labrador Trough, Canada’s foremost iron ore producing region.

SMI’s projects form half of LIM’s portfolio of 20 direct shipping iron ore (DSO) deposits located in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Québec. SMI holds 447 mining claims in Québec, covering over 14,000 hectares, centred around the town of Schefferville.

SMI is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Labrador Iron Mines Holdings Ltd. (LIM). LIM is a leader in the reactivation of the iron ore industry in the Schefferville/Menihek region of Canada’s Labrador Trough. LIM commenced initial production at its James Mine in June 2011 and through to the end of its third operating year, the Company has sold 3.6 million tonnes in 23 shipments of iron ore into the Chinese spot market.

SMI’s objective is to advance its iron ore projects, specifically those closest to LIM’s existing operations, including the Silver Yards processing facility. The area has a tradition in iron ore production that dates back to the early 1950s, when previous operations were carried out by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC). LIM’s DSO properties form part of the 250 million tonnes of historic reserves and resources previously identified by IOC. Today, LIM has a total NI 43-101 compliant resource of 54.8 million tonnes at 57% Fe, of which 16 million tonnes (56% Fe) are within SMI’s deposits. In addition, LIM has 108 million tonnes at 61% Fe of historic resource, of which 52 million tonnes (61% Fe) are held within SMI’s deposits.

SMI plans to bring its historical resources into NI 43-101 compliant status sequentially in line with their intended phases of production. Once in production, SMI is set to benefit from the area’s established infrastructure, which includes the town, airstrip, hydro power and direct railway access to the Port of Sept-Îles.
